Songs of Blood and Darkness Unlocked!
about 2 years ago – Wed, May 04, 2022 at 10:40:44 PM

Good morning, Family—

Thanks to your support, we’ve unlocked yet another stretch goal! Songs of Blood and Darkness, a set of loopable tracks to provide audio atmosphere to your games, is unlocked. It’s now part of every backer level.

As of right now, nearly 6000 backers are getting the limited deluxe edition of the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game. This is especially gratifying, because making this version of the book as fantastic as it can be is one of our highest hopes for this campaign. So for our next stretch goal, let’s further upgrade this tome.

In the days when government records weren’t easily or reliably available—or perhaps even trusted—important family records were kept in the home. And in a time when many home libraries consisted of nothing more than the family bible, that book was often the repository of familial knowledge.

In some cases, notes were jotted onto the end pages and even into the margins. But in many family bibles, there was a special section set aside for such knowledge. Pages for family records—births, deaths, marriages, and other “memoranda”—were common. Some bibles even contained  pages formatted like calendars, for organizing information by date; others had fill-in-the-blank family trees, space to note favorite biblical passages, or even portrait galleries for photographs to be pasted in.

For our next stretch goal, we will add a section to the beginning of the Limited DELUXE Edition of the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game for your own notes and family records. These pages will be formatted and designed after vintage bibles of the 20s and 30s. They’ll add even more atmosphere to your copy of the book, and will be perfect for recording data about beloved characters in your game. We’ll unlock this upgrade at $1,800,000.

We’re excited about unlocking this stretch goal. We can do it—and more—if everyone spreads the word a bit. There are just a few days left to this campaign, and they’ll probably be very exciting!

Thanks again for your support!

Dice Upgraded—Let’s Talk Audio!
about 2 years ago – Tue, May 03, 2022 at 01:29:57 AM

Hello, Family—

Today we entered the final week of this exciting Kickstarter campaign. We had a great weekend—we hit a stretch goal Saturday, and quickly rocketed toward the next one—and as a result, we’re starting this final week with a bang: another stretch goal hit!

Earlier in the campaign, we unlocked an audio reward—a suite of sound elements in which Cam and Steve narrate descriptive elements from the book (creatures, NPCs, items, locations, and even adventure scenes). The sorts of things a GM might read aloud, but can now deliver in the authentic voice of Old Gods of Appalachia.

With the roots of this game firmly planted in an audio medium—one with a very distinctive sound—it sure seems like it plays to our strengths to offer more audio for your game. So for our next stretch goal, we’d like to make a set of ambient musical scores arranged and performed by OGoA co-creator, narrator, and sound designer Steve Shell and OGoA musical necromancer Landon Blood. Steve and Landon work together on everything you hear in the background of the podcast, so your game will have a 100% authentic audio vibe when you hit “play” on these files. They’ll cover a variety of moods and settings—the Green, the dark of night, the dank spaces beneath the skin of the earth, and so on—and be fully loopable so you can run a given sound as long as it fits the current mood of your game.

We’re calling this suite Songs of Blood and Darkness, and it will be added to every backer level. We’ll unlock Songs of Blood and Darkness at $1,700,000.

With the pace of this campaign picking up, we can hit this stretch goal quickly and probably move on to several more before the week draws to an end—if we all help spread the word. Believe it or not, there are tens of thousands of gamers and Old Gods of Appalachia fans who have not yet discovered this campaign. Please spread the word—this campaign ends Friday, so now is the time to reach these potential backers!

Fearless and Good: Let’s Make Sam the Dog!
about 2 years ago – Mon, May 02, 2022 at 08:30:55 PM

Hello, Family—

If you’ve spent a lot of time immersed in the stories of Alternate Appalachia, perhaps you’re familiar with Sam, Dallas Shepherd’s old hound dog and protective companion. Sam was aged and blind, but not unseeing.

Sam was a beagle mix who was older than the boys themselves, blind as the day is long, and thick-necked as a log. Sam had been Dallas’s guardian angel most of his life. He was an old soldier who was too good of a boy to know how few years he probably had left.

Sam plays a heroic role in Season 2, and is beloved of the Old Gods of Appalachia Family. In coordination with Cam and Steve of the OGoA podcast, we’re going to make a Sam plushie. Since this isn’t really part of the roleplaying game, we aren’t making this a stretch goal—we’re just doing it.

Sam will be a roughly 7” plushie available as an add-on for backers at every level. He’s $20 and available to add to your pledge now!

To Add Sam to Your Pledge

First, a few important notes!

  •  Kickstarter won’t let you add a physical add-on if your main rewards are only digital. So, if you’re backing at PDF Family (or for no reward) you can’t add on Sam. Don’t panic! Simply increase the value of your pledge by $20. After the Kickstarter ends, you’ll be able to designate those funds for Sam in BackerKit (our pledge management system).
  •  This is a great time to consider upgrading! The Delver into the Dark backer level was a great deal when the campaign launched, and we’ve already added new rewards to it. We’re closing in on unlocking the Player’s Guide, and adding five copies to the Delver level. It’s a great opportunity to get nearly $100 in additional rewards for free!
  •  And while you’re adding Sam, consider grabbing the scrip set. It’s also only available as an add-on item—an immersive game prop that really takes you into Alternate Appalachia!

To add Sam from your computer:

  • Click the Manage Your Pledge near the top of the Kickstarter page
  • Click Change Your Pledge at the bottom of the next screen
  • Make any change to your backer level. You can change levels, or add $1 of bonus support. (Unfortunately, you have to do this or Kickstarter skips the Add-ons step. But you can undo it afterward.)
  • On the next page, add Sam, then click Continue
  •  Confirm changes, and you’re done!

If you’re on the mobile app:

  • Click Manage
  • Click the three dots at the upper right, and select Edit Reward
  • Click Continue when it shows your backer level
  • Scroll down to Sam and click Add, then click Continue at the bottom of the screen
  • Click Confirm, and you’re done!

If you have friends who are Old Gods of Appalachia podcast fans, be sure to tell them about Sam and this campaign. It ends in just over a week!

Player’s Guide Unlocked!
about 2 years ago – Mon, May 02, 2022 at 08:30:53 PM

Happy Saturday, Family—

Thanks to your wonderful support, we have hit another incredible milestone: $1,500,000. And with that, a major stretch goal unlocks: the Old Gods of Appalachia Player’s Guide. Backers get this 32-page book several ways:

  • It has been added, in PDF, to the rewards at every backer level. If you’re backing at any reward level, it’s now among your rewards.
  • It’s now available in print as an add-on, as a single copy or in a bundle of five (so every player at the table can have one) at a discount.
  • And the bundle of five in print is also added to the rewards of the Delver into the Dark backer level.

(Delver into the Dark’s physical rewards now total roughly $470 in value—and that doesn’t even count the autographs, playtest access, or digital items. If you aren’t backing at this level, you really should consider an upgrade!)

Let’s talk about the dice. When we set out to make the OGoA roleplaying game, we knew it was going to be something special. We wanted a special set of dice to go with it, and we chose literally the best premium dice we could find: Metallic Dice Games’s pyre style large, hard-edged resin dice. These dice, in a smoldering coal color pattern, feature a custom OGoA design on the 6 and 20 faces of the d6 and d20 dice, respectively. They’re also marked on the 17, 18, and 19 faces of the d20 to represent the special effects that come up with those results.

These dice are astounding, and no photo we've taken yet does justice to their beauty in real life.

At $1,600,000 we will further upgrade these dice, customizing every face of all four dice. These will be the pride of your dice collection—the most beautiful dice you own.

LaTia took this closeup, showing the size compared to a conventional d20.

This campaign is poised to enter its final week—a week that, if the past is any guide, will be exciting and filled with additional stretch goals. If, that is, we all keep spreading the word. Please take a moment to share this campaign, and let's unlock this upgrade and even more stretch goals!

Prop Kit Unlocked—Player’s Guide on the Way!
about 2 years ago – Sun, May 01, 2022 at 05:13:18 PM

Hello, Family—

Thanks to your support, this campaign continues to soar. We’ve hit another stretch goal already, and the digital prop crafting kit is now unlocked!

This kit will be a great tool for creating immersive props for your game table, with things like company logos; period fonts and decorative elements; letterheads; templates for newspaper articles, invoices, handbills, and business cards; and much more. It’s now added to the rewards at every backer level!

That brings us to the Old Gods of Appalachia Player’s Guide.

Introduce players to Alternate Appalachia and help them think about the characters they might create. Reference the most fundamental setting and character information, all without having to pass the corebook back and forth around the table (or buy additional copies of the whole thing). This 32-page softcover won’t contain anything that isn’t already in the corebook, but it will be a handy and inexpensive way to access and share important information for everyone around the game table.

And best of all, it benefits every backer level:

  • It will be added in PDF to every reward level.
  • It will be available in print as an add-on, including a bundle of five (enough for the whole gaming group) at a discounted price.
  • And backers at the Delver into the Dark backer level will get a bundle of five in print added to their rewards!

We’ll unlock the Player’s Guide at $1,500,000.

New backers drive stretch goals. Please take a minute to post, tweet, retweet, or share something about this campaign, so we can keep this amazing momentum going, unlock the Player’s Guide, and move on to even more great stretch goals that improve your rewards and make your backer levels even a better deal!

Thanks again for your support!
